Loomus and Estonian Vegan Society are inviting everyone to the 7th International Animal Futures Conference. The conference will be held in a hybrid form both in the Tallinn Botanic Garden and online on 6.-7. May 2022.

In the time of global environmental crisis, animal exploitation is increasingly mentioned as a key driver of climate change. However, these discussions are mostly held from an anthropocentric worldview which focuses on reducing the consumption of animal products for the sake of the survival of humankind. How to introduce animal advocacy into the environmental discourse?

This conference focuses on imagining futures for human-animal relations, in a world that is rapidly transforming. We invite papers to engage for example, with the following issues, from critical animal studies perspectives:

• What challenges and opportunities do global crises present for theorising and working towards animal liberation?
• What place could animal advocacy issues occupy in environmental debates?
• How to link environmental issues with animal ethics?
• How could we approach – theoretically and/or practically – the connection between the environmental impact of the consumption of animal products and the suffering of nonhuman animals?
• What barriers exist on individual and institutional levels for linking animal advocacy and climate goals, and how to overcome those?
• What is the role of individuals and institutions in bringing together and advocating for nonhuman animals and environmental and climate sustainability?
• How does animal advocacy help to reach climate goals?
• How are environmental sustainability, animal ethics and the wellbeing of various marginalised individuals, groups and communities interlinked? How to develop intersectional approaches to human-animal relations in the context of the climate crisis?
• etc.

The conference will be held in English. We are looking forward to contributions from academics and activists. Please send your abstract (max 300 words) to conference@loomus.ee by January, 30, 2022.

The conference will take place in a hybrid form both in the Tallinn Botanic Garden and online and will be live streamed. It is possible to deliver a presentation on Zoom.
